This was a typical hot, humid, hazy day in the Smoky Mountains. This is one of two daily excursion trains which the GSMR runs. This one departs Bryson City, NC at 10:30am and heads West to Hewitt, NC where the train pulls into a siding, the locomotives run around the train and the train heads back to Bryson City. The other one leaves Bryson City at 1pm and heads East to Dillsboro, NC, where the locomotive runs around the train and heads back to Bryson City. |

Who would have thought 20 years ago you would find Bluefield, WV as a hub of intermodal activity. In this scene we have a Eastbound stack train led by dash 9s NS 9265, NS 9459 and SD60 NS 6564 while a Westbound stack train enters the yard on an adjacent track. Bluefield is the crew change point for all through freight. The Eastbound crew just came on duty and is ready to assault the New River Valley with 11800 horsepower. |

NS 9420 and 5 other units lead a long empty coal hopper train Westbound on track 2 bound for Auville Yard in Iaeger, WV over the massive viaduct at Coopers, WV. These longer than normal trains of empties with many units end up being broken up into smaller trains for mine runs. An eastbound Autorack train passes on track 1 in the background. The track in the foreground is the abandoned former N&W Bluestone branch which still exists but has been abandoned and out of service since 1988. This portion of the trackage has been used for car storage off and on for several years until recently. |
