Description:  NS 3208, a former Southern Railway high short hood SD40-2 leads a mixed freight over Hartwell Lake near Toccoa, GA. There is a little something for everyone in this shot, a high hood SD40-2 leading long hood forward, a SD67M, an ex-Conrail SD40-2, a widecab GE and an SD70M-2. Note that Hartwell Lake is very low in this picture, I remember hearing there was a drought going on at the time I was there taking these pictures.

Note the construction going on to replace a road bridge on the other side of the ROW. This unit was one of the last order of SD40-2's from the N&W in the late 1970's and were the first units purchased with low short hood.

I have only seen something like this once before. This work train was mostly empty gons for picking up used ties.

Description:  Its not very often you see three SD40-2s leading a mainline freight in 2013, but heres NS train 39Q with NS 6110 and two others leaving the yard after making a pickup / set off in Radford, VA. Note the signal is lined for an eastbound movement on main 2 as soon as 39Q crosses over to main 1 at the next interlocking "JC" and clears another train will head East.

Description:  SD40-2 NS 6191, GP60 NS 7111 and a couple CW40-9s sitting in the siding with a loaded coal train waiting on a recrew while SD70M-2 NS 2689 leads another loaded coal train that is currently being recrewed in the yard at Alloy, WV. These trains will head over the bridge at Deepwater to head East on the NS Princeton-Deepwater District which is the former Virginian Railway. Note the interesting striping on the pilot of NS 6191, there are not many painted like this and it is very reminiscant of how Southern painted their SD40-2's, even though this particular locomotive is of N&W heritage.
