CSXT 898 |
Description: |
CSXT 898 working hard as it heads up the Gauley Branch towards the main line at Gauley. This train had 56 loaded coal hoppers and stalled just east of where I was standing. It took three attempts to make it up and over the trestle over the new river at Gauley. This was the first attempt. Afterwards, the train backed down the branch back to Gauley Bridge, WV where the locomotives detatched, and sanded various parts of the line before trying two more times, the third being successful. It was snowing quite heavily at the time and was about 17 degrees outside. |

CSXT 898 |
Description: |
CSXT 898 and 779 lead 56 loaded coal hoppers off of the Gauley Branch over the New River and onto the CSX ex-C&O Mainline at Gauley Bridge, WV. The Gauley Branch is a lightly used branch with a very steep grade from the town of Gauley Bridge up and over the New River. These 2 AC units were struggling and it took three attempts to make it over the bridge. The first attempt the train stalled short of the trestle, then the units uncoupled, ran light and sanded various parts of the line and then tried 2 more times, this being the successful one. They could really have used either helpers or another unit on the head end. It was snowing pretty heavily and the temperature was about 17 degrees this day. |
